PETALING JAYA: Malaysia will offer a grant of 70,000 euros (RM334,000) to the International Maritime Law Institute (IMLI) for two study grants and one of them will be given to a Malaysian, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.
The Transport Minister said this was to honour 30 years of Malaysia-IMLI cooperation and part of Malaysia’s commitments under the Integrated Technical Cooperation Programme with the IMO.
“Malaysia will make a grant of 70,000 euros to IMLI for two study grants, one of which will be allocated to a Malaysian candidate.
“The MOT will look into recommending more government officers to attend IMLI’s specialised programmes, as well as in the areas of international disputes, the law of ports, maritime security, marine environment protection, seafarers’ rights and more,” he said on his Facebook page on Wednesday (Dec 8).
Earlier, Dr Wee attended a bilateral meeting with the IMLI on the third day of the International Maritime Organisation Assembly after chairing the daily ministry pre-council meeting.
IMLI president Prof David J. Attard commended the calibre of Malaysia’s maritime professionals, who are alumni of IMLI’s renowned maritime courses.
To date, Dr Wee said Malaysia has sent eight government officers to IMLI, representing the Attorney General’s Chambers, Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, Royal Malaysian Navy and the Marine Department.
“They had all successfully completed the Master of Laws or Master of Humanities programmes under IMLI,” he added.
