Transport Ministry to investigate double-decker bus crash

PETALING JAYA: The Transport Ministry will conduct an investigation into a double-decker express bus that overturned at Sultan Iskandar highway in Kuala Lumpur, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.

The Transport Minister said the company and driver would be subject to the Industry Code of Practice (Icop) on occupational safety and health in sectors and industries.

“If the company and driver fail the audit, which is a part of the conditions set by the Land Transport Agency (Apad) and the Road Transport Department (JPJ), the operator’s permit and license may be suspended or revoked.

“The driver’s license can also be taken by the JPJ based on provisions under the Road Transport Act if the driver is charged in court,” he said in a Facebook post on Friday (July 22).

Dr Wee said the ministry sympathised with all the victims of the accident.

He also reiterated that the ministry would not compromise with any party who is found guilty.

“The life and safety of passengers is always the ministry’s priority,” he said.

On Thursday (July 21) morning, 19 passengers had to be taken to hospital after a double-decker bus they were travelling in overturned en route to Singapore from Perak.

According to the Fire and Rescue Service Department, the bus driver is believed to have lost control of the vehicle before it overturned.
