Several villages inundated following flash floods in Penampang

KOTA KINABALU: The Penampang constituency service centre has been told to assist the district disaster committee to help victims affected by flash floods.

Several areas in Penampang were flooded after heavy rain on Monday (Feb 13) night.

Penampang MP Datuk Ewon Benedick, who is also Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister, said he had received reports of several villages being inundated.

He said that the district officer Francis Chong has also opened the disaster operation room.

“I have just been in contact with Chong on the flood situation there and all personnel have been asked to standby.

“There are also shelters identified and relocation of those affected are being done.

“Since I am in Kuala Lumpur to attend the Parliament meeting, I have asked my officers who are in Sabah and the Penampang parliamentary service centre to assist with the flood matters,” he said in a statement.

Ewon said he will keep up with the updates from the district officer and relevant agencies to monitor the floods in Penampang, and reminded residents to practise safety measures during the bad weather.

As of 11pm, the rain had stopped in Penampang.

The Meteorological Department earlier warned about rain and thunderstorms on Monday evening.

West coast districts like Papar, Putatan, Kota Kinabalu, Tuaran and Kota Belud were also affected, besides Beaufort.
