Malaysian student detained in Egypt released, says Saifuddin

PUTRAJAYA: A Malaysian student at the Al-Azhar University who was detained by the Egyptian authorities recently has been released on Saturday (Sept 24).

Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Abdullah in a statement on Sunday (Sept 25) said the student was in good condition and would continue his studies at the university.

He said the Foreign Ministry had worked closely with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Egypt through the the Malaysian Embassy in Cairo and the Egyptian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur to ensure the welfare of the student was safeguarded.

“The Government of Malaysia also expresses its deepest appreciation to the Government of Egypt for its close cooperation in this matter,” he said.

No details were available as to the reasons for the arrest.

Saifuddin added that the ministry constantly pay close attention to the safety and welfare of Malaysians abroad and also advised Malaysians to always be aware of and obey the laws of the country they were in. – Bernama
