Johor Sultan provides aid to 31 families affected by Pontian floods

JOHOR BARU: Some 31 families who were affected by the flash flood in Pontian have received special aid from Johor Ruler Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar.

According to a statement on the Sultan’s official Facebook page, the aid was distributed to the victims through Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi.

“The aid was distributed to heads of families of the victims by Onn Hafiz during his visit to the three temporary relief centres (PPS) in the district on Thursday (May 5),” read the statement.

Meanwhile, in another Facebook post, Onn Hafiz said that heavy rain on Wednesday (May 4) morning caused flash floods at several villages in Pekan Nenas, Pontian.

“The affected areas include Kampung Paya Embun, Kampung Seri Gambut, Kampung Melayu Raya, Kampung Maju Jaya, Kampung Bukit Panjang, Kampung Parit Pasir, Kampung Jasa Sepakat dan Lorong Faizal.

Earlier, it was reported that some 168 victims from 31 families were placed at three PPS in Pontian on Thursday (May 5) morning.

As of 8pm, the number of victims seeking shelter at the centres dropped to 51 from 11 families, according to the state disaster management committee in a statement.

The committee added that one of the PPS was closed at about 6pm as victims were able to return to their homes.
