KUALA LUMPUR: Investigations into a rental car being stolen after it was rented out via a phone application are still ongoing, say police.
In a statement on Wednesday (July 6), Brickfields OCPD Asst Comm Amihizam Abdul Shukor said that the victim had received a notice of interest to rent his Toyota Alphard on June 9.
The rental period was for one day and the hand-off was made via the rental company on June 29 in Bangsar South.
However, the agreed return date on June 30 came and the suspect failed to return the car.
“At that time, the rental company Trevo said that it would collect the car from the suspect, but he insisted that he would return the car to the victim and to cancel the return request on the application. However, when the victim contacted the suspect, he was told that the car was handed over to another renter in Banting.
“The victim has been unable to contact the suspect since then. Trevo representatives have made a police report today as a covering report and it has been classified as a ‘Refer to other report’ to the victim’s report on July 1,” he said.
The police statement was made in response to the victim who had posted on Twitter about his stolen vehicle.
On Twitter, the victim alleged that there could have been some foul play within the rental company itself that led to the car theft.
“I suspect there is an inside man syndicate because the booking on the Trevo application has disappeared. Isn’t that weird?” Twitter user Nor Azam Budin said while also tagging the official police and SPRM Twitter pages to his post.
