Covid-19: Up to 17,000 deaths prevented, thanks to vaccination, says Health DG

PETALING JAYA: Covid-19 vaccination has managed to prevent the deaths of up to 17,000 lives in Malaysia, says Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

Citing an Institute for Clinical Research (ICR) latest study, the Health director-general said the merits of Covid-19 vaccines became more apparent in September 2021, when almost half of the Malaysian population got fully vaccinated.

“Covid-19 vaccines have saved between 16,000 and 17,000 lives in the last 15 months, a new modelling study found on Monday.

“ICR director Dr Kalaiarasu said the country began to see significant benefits of vaccination after almost half the population got fully vaccinated in September 2021,” said Dr Noor Hisham in a tweet on Tuesday (July 26).

To date, 98% of Malaysia’s adult population have received two doses of the Covid-19 vaccine, according to the ministry’s CovidNow portal.

Some 16 million people in the country have already received their first booster shots.
