PETALING JAYA: Finance Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Aziz, who has been appointed the Selangor Barisan Nasional treasurer, has brought along “sugar” with him, says Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
The Umno president said that for Barisan to win Selangor, there must be a game-changer, as the state was known for its extraordinary politics.
“Tan Sri Noh Omar said there will be ‘sugar’ coming soon. Tengku Zafrul is the one bringing the ‘sugar’,” said Ahmad Zahid to loud cheers from delegates the closing ceremony of the Selangor Barisan Convention 2022 at the Setia City Convention Centre here on Sunday (July 31).
Earlier, Selangor Barisan chairman Tan Sri Noh Omar in his speech had alluded to someone bringing “sugar” with him.
Noh had also announced Tengku Zafrul as the new Selangor Barisan treasurer.
Ahmad Zahid also said that if there was to be change in Selangor, Barisan veterans must be wiling to step back and make way for new faces.
There were many capable young professionals in Selangor, he said, adding that those in politics must be willing to accept them with an open heart.
“We have been warlords for a long time. If we want change in Selangor, accept anyone who is loyal to the party and is able to help, no matter where he is from.
“If there is someone with potential, why not we take him under our wing, if he can help us?” Ahmad Zahid said in his speech.
He added that party members should not feel unsafe or threatened over newcomers.
“I’m confident that if they can rise without stepping on anyone else, we are safe,” he said.
Later, speaking to reporters, Tengku Zafrul thanked Barisan for the coalition’s trust in him as the Selangor Barisan treasurer and said that he would give his full cooperation.
On whether he will be a candidate in the next general election, Tengku Zafrul said it will depend on Barisan to decide.
“Whether I become a candidate or not, it is up to the leadership to decide,” he said.
