4WD entered culvert following floods, driver safe, say Penampang cops

KOTA KINABALU: The driver of a red four-wheel drive (4WD) vehicle that entered a culvert near Donggongon town is safe, say police.

Penampang OCPD Deputy Supt Mohd Haris Ibrahim, in a statement on Wednesday (Feb 15), said the incident, which went viral, occurred on Tuesday (Feb 14) when the district was hit with floods.

“We are made aware of the circulated pictures of the 4WD in the culvert near a roundabout in Donggongon, which went viral on social media since early morning.

“The police confirmed receiving a report from the vehicle owner, who revealed that the inundated roads caused him to accidentally swerve towards the drain.

“However, the driver escaped but the vehicle was washed away by strong currents and entered the culvert,” he said in the statement.

DSP Mohd Haris reminded the public to refrain from uploading unverified information on social media to avoid confusion and panic in the community.
