Later this year, Microsoft will be launching its next generation Xbox gaming console which is called the Xbox Series X. Previously codenamed Project Scarlett, the console is powered by a custom chip made by AMD and famed tech YouTuber Austin Evans has recently provided a closer look at the chip.
Featuring 3.8GHz 8-core Zen 2 CPU and RDNA 2-class GPU with 52 Compute Units and 12 TFLOPS processing power, if you look closely at the picture shared by Austin, you would then noticed something in the label. That’s right, the custom AMD 7nm chip for Xbox Series X is actually made in Malaysia although it was also clearly stated there that this chip diffused in Taiwan.

This is because the silicon inside the chip was actually made by the well-known foundry, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) before it was sent for packaging in Malaysia. We not exactly sure of the factory location but based in our knowledge, that would probably be the TF AMD facility in Penang which has been around since 1972.
Truth to be told, this is also not the first Xbox chip to be assembled in Malaysia as the Xbox One X processor which was also made by AMD has similar label as well. In case you are wondering, yes, the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 4 Pro also feature chips that were diffused in Taiwan and made in Malaysia because they were also sourced from AMD.
However, as opposed to Sony’s consoles which are available in our market, having Xbox’s chip to be assembled in our country provide a sense of irony though as none of the Xbox consoles so far have officially been released in Malaysia.
