At long last and after much anticipation, the OnePlus 8 series is officially out of the bag. In true OnePlus fashion, the new series comprises two devices: the smaller, more compact OnePlus 8 and the plus-sized OnePlus 8 Pro.
Much like its predecessor, the OnePlus 8 Pro is clearly the top-of-the-line model in the lineup and while both devices are packed with the equally impressive hardware, there are some small differences. Internally, both the OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro are rocking Qualcomm’s top-tier Snapdragon 865 SoC.
Both devices are available with either 8GB or 12GB RAM, although it should be noted that the Non-Pro variant uses LPDDR4X while the Pro version of the phone is equipped with the faster LPDDR5 memory standard.
Both the OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro also get the IP68 water and dust resistance rating and support the brand’s 30W Warp Charge wired. And Warp Charge 30 Wireless charging technology.
As mentioned, there some notable difference between the two devices, notably their displays. The OnePlus 8’s Fluid AMOLED display measures in at 6.55-inches, and has a Full HD+ resolution. Further, its maximum refresh rate is only 90Hz.
As for the OnePlus 8 Pro, the phone is equipped with a 6.78-inch Fluid AMOLED display, but still retains the same QHD+ resolution as the OnePlus 7 Pro. However, it gets a bump up in its refresh rate, from 90Hz to 120Hz, along with a 240Hz touch sampling rate. Regardless of the model, the display on both devices support HDR10+.
Then there are the cameras. To cut to the chase, the OnePlus 8 comes with a main triple-camera setup, comprising a 48MP Sony IMX586 main, a 16MP ultra-wide, and a 2MP macro camera for close-up shots.
As for the OnePlus 8 Pro, the phone sports a quad-camera module that comprises a 48MP Sony IMX689 sensor, a 48MP ultrawide angle, an 8MP telephoto with 3x optical hybrid zoom, and a 5MP colour filter. The selfie camera for both cameras are the same 16MP Sony IMX471 sensor, which resides in the punch hole cutout at the top left of each display.
Battery-wise, the OnePlus 8 is powered by a 4300mAh battery, while the OnePlus 8 Pro has a 4510mAh battery. Oh, and lest we forget, both devices will be 5G capable.
The OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro will both go on sale from 29 April onwards in the US. The OnePlus 8 will start from US$699 (~RM3038) for the 8GB+128GB variant, while the 12GB+256GB version will retail for US$799 (~RM3461). The phone will be available in four colours: Onyx Black, Glacial Green, Polar Silver, and the earlier reported Interstellar Glow.
The OnePlus 8 Pro, on the other hand starts at US$899 (~RM3894) and tops out at US$999 (~RM4327). Sadly, the phone doesn’t come in the same Interstellar Glow option as its non-Pro sibling, but it will be available in Onyx Black, Glacial Green, and Ultramarine Blue.
At the time of writing, OnePlus did not specify local availability or pricing.
