WhatsApp Companion Mode Will Let You Use One Number For Two Phones

It has long been rumoured that WhatsApp is planning to add support for a second mobile device for its multi-device feature. In the latest Android beta build, WABetaInfo reports that the second smartphone linking feature, first sighted just over a week ago, is called Companion Mode.

Currently, multi-device allows you to be signed into four different non-mobile devices using the same account without needing a connection to your phone; it supports the desktop client, Facebook Portal, or the WhatsApp web browser client. To improve on this, Companion Mode will add multi-device support for both smartphones and Android tablets.

As previously reported, the iteration seen by WABetaInfo requires you to scan a QR code from your main phone using your second phone to link them. If your second phone is already logged in with another WhatsApp account, it will automatically log out and erase all the current account’s local data, so you’re advised to backup any data to the cloud before using this feature.

At the time of writing, Companion Mode is still under development so there’s no telling when it will be rolled out to the public. In the meantime, you can check out the new features that WhatsApp recently just launched such as emoji reactions, 2GB file transfers, and Communities.
