When it comes to mobile games, finding one that doesn’t try to nickel-and-dime its players is like finding a needle in a haystack. That is, until Apple Arcade came along, and became a place where gems like The Oregon Trail can call home. But it looks like the game is ready to head to other places, such as Steam on PC, as well as the Nintendo Switch.

For those who only knew of its Apple Arcade incarnation, The Oregon Trail actually has a very rich history as an educational game. Its original incarnation came to being all the way back in 1971, developed by Don Rawitsch, Bill Heinemann, and Paul Dillenberger. And it was meant to be a history lesson on its own, about the realities of the eponymous Oregon Trail in the 19th century. Fittingly, as an educational tool, it has gone through multiple revisions just as books do, with the 2021 version being the latest.

As for the game itself, you choose your traveling party, stock up your wagon, and ensure the entire party makes it to Oregon. Along the way, you’ll face unexpected and dangerous situations, and you’ll have to make some tough choices to deal with them.

The version of The Oregon trail that is coming to Steam and the Nintendo Switch will be faithful adaptations of its Apple Arcade incarnation. It will also come with all five content updates, as well as new events, visual filters, and accessibility options. Gameloft says that the game will be available on 14 November 2022, and it is already listed on Steam, even if without its  price to go with it. It will show up soon on the Nintendo eShop, but no date as to when exactly. If you’re among the few who prefer the Microsoft Store over Steam, then pre-orders will open on 7 November.
