Sony has officially announced the Xperia 5 IV, a high-end release that has expanded Xperia’s mark IV lineup which previously includes the Xperia 1 IV and Xperia 10 IV. For the first time in the Xperia 5 series, the new model also features wireless charging.

The Xperia 5 IV looks almost indistinguishable from its predecessor, with a 6.1-inch OLED display and a 120Hz refresh rate, although it is now 50% brighter, or so Sony claims. The phone is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus on both sides and retains IP68 water and dust resistance.

Under the hood, the phone runs on the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chipset from Qualcomm, together with 8GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, and a microSD card slot for storage expansion up to 1TB. The new model also supports eSIM in its dual-SIM offering, along with compatibility for Wi-Fi 6, NFC, and Bluetooth 5.2.

Sony has also equipped the Xperia 5 IV with three cameras on the back: a 24mm standard lens, a 60mm telephoto lens with no optical zoom, and a 16mm ultra-wide — all of which use 12MP sensors. Each rear camera is capable of 120fps readout, while up front, the device sports a 12MP selfie shooter.

The battery capacity has gotten a significant boost from last year’s 4,500mAh to 5,000mAh. On top of that, this year’s Xperia 5 notably adds compatibility with wireless charging and even reverse wireless charging. When it comes to audio, the Xperia 5 is one of the few high-end phones that still include a 3.5mm headphone jack while supporting Bluetooth LE and the LDAC codec.

The Sony Xperia 5 IV will be available in the US for US$1,000 (~RM4,480) starting in late October, coming in black and green. For the Malaysian market, Sony did not reveal an exact release date or pricing but said that it would be made available within the fourth quarter of this year although the colour option is limited to just black. If the local price of the Xperia 1 IV is anything to go by, there is a possibility it might be cheaper here than in the US.
