Rapid KL is providing free rides to Klang Valley commuters for a whole month, but those who recently purchased a My50 pass might have felt excluded from this offer as they had already paid in advance. To rectify this, the public transport operator is extending existing My50 passes for an additional 30 days, free of charge.

If you are not familiar, My50 is a monthly travel pass that costs RM50 and allows commuters to use any and all Rapid KL public transport services as many times as they wish within 30 days. This includes the MRT, LRT, BRT, Monorail, and the Rapid KL bus services.

For those with passes expiring between 17 June to 15 July, you will get an extra 30 days of rides that can be redeemed at a station counter the day after your pass expires. For those who bought the pass on 16 June, you can also get an extra month after it expires on top of the seven-day extension, but it must be activated between 23 to 25 July.

Rapid KL advises those who bought the pass on 16 June to keep the receipt for making verification easier but clarifies that it is not absolutely necessary to provide the receipt. Commuters are also required to fill up a form on the PULSE app or a hardcopy form at the station in order to redeem the free rides.

To recap, the government announced 30 days of free rides on all Rapid KL public transport services in conjunction with the official opening of the first phase of the MRT Putrajaya line. The month-long offer also extends to Klang Valley KTM Komuter and SkyPark Link services.

According to Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob, the initiative will cost the government a total of RM155 million, with RM140 million for Rapid KL services and RM15 million for KTM services, but experts have analysed that the free rides will result in only a temporary rise in public transport ridership. The LRT has seen breakdowns and delays becoming a regular occurrence, with the Transport Ministry allocating RM1.3 billion for repairs and upgrades and promising improved frequencies by August.
