Generative AI and chatbots based on them are all the rage right now, so it’s no real surprise to see more and more companies integrate them into their own products. Next in line to do so seems to be Instagram, which is looking to add an AI chatbot of its own in a feature that lets you chat with an AI.

Reverse engineer Alessandro Paluzzi shared on Twitter a screenshot featuring an Instagram page that reads “Chat with an AI”. Paluzzi claims that the Meta subsidiary is referring to its bots as AI Agents, and that they “will be able to answer questions and give advice”. You also have a choice of up to 30 different personalities.

The last line in the screenshot suggests that the AI chatbot can help “Inspire your creativity”. Or as it is described, it can help users “Find the best way to express yourself and get help writing messages”. Which sounds like a lazy way to generate captions for whatever you share on the platform, rather than just letting the picture prove its worth of a thousand words.

For now, there’s no indication as to when, or indeed if, Instagram will be releasing its AI Agents into the wild. It’s also a bit mind-boggling to imagine having to choose from a list of 30 personalities for the AI chatbot to begin with. All that being said, at the very least there’s a fitting offering to be had here, in that expressing yourself bit. Not that it is particularly unique, as when worded correctly, you can likely get the likes of ChatGPT, Bing or Bard to do the same. It’s also unclear what sort of questions Instagram expects you to ask its AI chatbot, and what sort of answers users can expect from it.
