As you may have heard, Celcom customers are able to connect to the national 5G network since the beginning of this month. This is provided that they are in the 5G coverage areas and are using any of the supported 5G phones currently listed by the Digital Nasional Berhad.
Of course, let’s not forget that they must also utilise one of the supported Celcom 5G plans. For Celcom Xpax Prepaid Mix & Match customers, they can tap into the 5G network by obtaining either the RM32 Primary Plan which provides a 30GB data quota or the RM42 Primary Plan that comes with a 40GB allocation.
As it turns out, Celcom will be charging an additional fee of RM10 for Xpax Prepaid customers that connect to the 5G network after the initial promo period that will last until 31 December 2022. This is something that was not revealed by the telco during its initial 5G announcement earlier this week.
The FAQ document on Celcom’s website noted that this fee would be deducted from the customer’s credit and here’s a bummer: customers are not able to directly disassociate themselves from the additional costs of RM10.
Based on our interpretation of that particular section of the FAQ, we reckoned that this could transcend into the unwanted charges realm once the policy is put into place next year. This is because the FAQ did not specify at which exact point the additional fee would be triggered by customers – whether it is during the first connection to the 5G network or simply by putting in the Celcom SIM card into a supported 5G device.
The FAQ also did not say whether the additional fee can be avoided by disabling the 5G setting on one’s phone. We have reached out to Celcom to obtain further clarifications regarding this but the telco kept on pointing us back to the free 5G access promotion instead of providing us with a clear and definitive answer.
All in all, it seemed that we have to wait until this coming January to see how Celcom will actually put this policy into place. For what it’s worth, things may change though since there is still ample time for the telco to finalize the 5G policy for Xpax prepaid customers.
